John Edwards: Douchebag

My latest entry in the Hickory Switches category could not be better chosen.

Time has a piece that looks at whether or how Edwards might find redemption. I don’t give a flip-he doesn’t deserve redemption, and he has a much higher power to contend with on his dying day…I’ll leave redemption in better hands than mine.

There’s unpopular, there’s widely loathed, there’s despised, and then there’s John Edwards. Americans are a tolerant people, but they have a line, and evidently, when you cheat on your cancer-stricken wife, lie about it to everyone while running for president, and then decline to acknowledge fathering a love child for two years, you’ve crossed it. Given the towering stack of strikes against him, can Edwards resume any kind of public life? Short of curing his wife’s cancer, is there anything he could do to get people to at least tolerate him?

That pretty well sums it up for me. I suggest he will have his fans and followers, but I’m sure most of them will be people that stand to enjoy some personal gain by standing by this sub-human. While he has begun to attempt some public display of regret and remorse, upon closer inspection it becomes more clear the real reasons why..and why NOW.

Just as with the Enquirer splashing the original headlines that he would ultimately have to admit were true, we find out there’s a new book coming out that contains facts Edwards will not be able to deny:

When asked why he lied, Edwards told Bob Woodruff he “didn’t want the public to know” what he had done.

But why did Edwards come clean now? ABC News has taped an interview with a former staffer, Andrew Young, which is set to air on Friday. In that interview Young said Edwards asked him to claim the paternity.

Young is publishing a book next week called “The Politician”. In it he makes several allegations.

“He is doing it a week before my book comes out,” Young said. “There is going to be some stuff (he can’t deny). There are voice mails in his voice, and voice mails in Elizabeth’s voice, that absolutely contradict almost everything he has said.”

“He also asked for me to arrange for a fake paternity test,” Young said. “He asked me to steal a diaper so he could secretly do a DNA test to see if it was indeed his child.”

Young said he ignored Edwards’ requests. Next week the network will air an interview with Young where more stunning allegations are revealed.

It’s one thing to apologize and ask for forgiveness when you realize you’ve done something wrong and want to make things right. It’s quite another to do so before your acts of horror are brought to light by someone else…with so much more to gain.

John Edwards, at the risk of being redundant, is a douchebag.
