I tweeted about this the other day, but was so wrapped up in other stuff that I didn’t bother to write about it here…until THIS came along:

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton endorsed Karzai’s outreach, at least as far as reintegrating low-level Taliban fighters whom the United States deems not ideologically committed to insurgency and who can be lured with jobs and the promise of security from retaliation.

“You don’t make peace with your friends,” Clinton said in a news conference. “You have to be willing to engage with your enemies.”
[snip]
Participants in the conference pledged $140 million to a special “reintegration fund ” to provide jobs and an infrastructure for reformed insurgents — a figure that is projected to reach as much as $500 million over five years.

So Obama’s new, more civilized, modern warfare shifts gears from actually killing the bad guys to giving them jobs. Hunh-maybe this is his dry-run before he gets all of us..back here at home…to start drawing a paycheck again too.

I’m told by men far wiser than I that this might not be a bad thing, and in fact has been tried successfully in the past-as recently as in Iraq-but I just can’t get my head around the notion that reintegrating Taliban loyalists (only so long as they aren’t really BAD Taliban loyalists) is any way to end a war…with the Taliban.

Have we learned nothing from recent events about people that pretend to be good guys long enough to get close to large numbers of people so they can kill themselves and everyone around them?
