I always get a chuckle when I read stories from Democrats railing against the so-called special interest groups that curry favor with Republicans and the extent to which our country (read Democrat voters) is victimized by that dynamic in some way. An innocent look-see at Wikipedia for the generic definition of “special interest group” yields something worth talking about for a moment:
A Special Interest Group (SIG) is a community with an interest in advancing a specific area of knowledge, learning or technology where members cooperate to effect or to produce solutions within their particular field, and may communicate, meet, and organize conferences. They may at times also advocate or lobby on a particular issue or on a range of issues but are generally distinct from Advocacy groups and pressure groups which are normally set up for the specific political aim; the distinction is not firm however and some organizations can adapt and change their focus over time.
Time and time again, it has been Democrats in this 111th Congress that have played the SIG card against Americans, most notably in order to curry favor with voters by beating up on Big Finance or Big Pharma or even Big Auto…while going out of their way to suck up to (and curry favor with) with Big Labor. Consider this quietly passed-over news gem via Senate vote #239 which defeated “the Motion to Proceed (Motion to Proceed to the Consideration of S. J. Res. 30).” What IS S.J. Res. 30, you ask? Well, it was a Senate resolution :
[p]roviding for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the National Mediation Board relating to representation election procedures.
This resolution was sponsored by Isakson (R GA) and co-sponsored by 40 … wait for it… Republicans! Yes, 41 Republican Senators believed a rule change from the National Mediation Board should not be allowed to go forward. Why? Because it would continue Obama’s payback to Big Labor (read special interest group) for helping get him elected by making it that much easier for Unions to force employees to organize under their control…err, I mean…representation.
The biggest reason this is even worth a second look is because Reid et. al. felt this a more important issue to put on the agenda than addressing the Bush tax cuts issue they chose to punt on until after the general election. Or a jobs bill…or any other number of issues they could have chosen to address rather than making sure they got the Union’s needs attended to before any of the rest of us slobs out here trying to stay alive in the economy they have destroyed with reckless abandon.
Hundreds of millions of dollars in donations to Democrats in the last election cycle MUST be held up in THIS cycle if the Democrats have any chance at all of retaining power. This is no time to put that money at risk…the rest of us will just have to wait until AFTER the election for any hope or change or improvement to our station in life.
It sure would be nice if Politicians could agree that we, the People were the most important special interest group out here…but I think it’s too much to ask for.
